He started saying words at nine month old. I noticed he was talking much more than the children who were using pacifiers. I’m not sure if there are any studies on this, but it makes sense that if we are limiting when they can produce sounds we might also be limiting their speech. She seems to want to explore and play more than the materials or method allows. I feel that it is wrong to restrict her to only one type of play that is correct in favour of more free play with objects. It's made me think of her play in a new light. As an AMI 0-3 Montessori Guide, I found many errors and misconceptions in the original post. The materials described are not found in an Infant Community, but rather, a Casa dei Bambini. The same goes for sleeping style, and feeding. I would hope that these corrections would be implemented but I am still so glad to see you have posted here. It just goes to show that we have a lot of work to do to dispose of common misconceptions such as the ones stated above through our practice :) Alanahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03740906671077805315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4831666902408078223.post-42614163360901963962019-07-03T02:23:54.674-07:002019-07-03T02:23:54.674-07:00Dear Megan,

I am MCI trained, from London and I am very glad that you have clarified the points raised in the original post. I was reading it with dread and fear, thinking that this is really the perception of the Montessori 0-3? I have been working with the Under Threes for a long time and NEVER have 'forced' independence on them, neither with potty training, food or sleep, or activities. Respect towards the child and the family, Freedom of movement, exploration, repetition and following the child in his/her activity and development is what we do as Montessorians (much more than that of course, but need to get back to work :-) ). The Pikler approach is wonderful (I am Hungarian, from Budapest, where the whole idea stemming from) and it has many overlapping principles with the Montessori philosophy - in fact, not long ago I have been at a Pikler conference in London where they showed a 'Pikler' Kindergarten...well, it really could have been a Montessori one, as all the principles, the prepared environment, the freedoms AND the Montessori materials for the different curriculum areas were there, ON shelves etc. For the very little ones, we can ALL offer treasure basket and heuristic play sessions (NOT Montessori, NOR Pikler) and in between there is PLAY, singing, stories, movement, and loving each other and exploring the world together (as a mother, or a childminder or a teacher). And the 'following the child' and respectful care - giving is something that again, as practitioners, parents or educators should always implement, no matter what philosophy we believe in. The child comes first. It was an amzing gift to us! At 23 months she still sucks when she is falling asleep, stressed or bored. I'm not worried about weaning her off, as I trust her to do it as and when she is ready. I dont know of many teens who still sucks their thumbs, but there is always the small risk. A risk worth taking for many sleepful nights for all of us over the last two years!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4831666902408078223.post-40761712190032184742019-06-08T07:32:52.772-07:002019-06-08T07:32:52.772-07:00Dear Nadine, I happened upon your wonderful articl...Dear Nadine, I happened upon your wonderful article again after 10 years. Offering every 30min is about handling children who have become diaper trained to pee little & often to relieve the pressure on the bladder rather then learn to empty fully. True Montessori Toilet Learning starts with Toilet Awareness from infancy so that the child from the beginning is not only diaper conditioned & can more fairly and easily progress to increased independency in toilet use as their own motor skills develop. Before the necessary gross motor skills are there they are still aware of & able to practice proper use of the muscles connected to coordinated release & full proper emptying. I have trouble accepting increasing hands off approach to RIE toileting that seems to be leaving children in diapers longer than ever in human history. Diapering is a parent led process & unless you are changing a wet cloth each time immediately it's asking alot of a baby & young child to connect the diaper change moment, however respectful & gentle, with their actual bodily sensations around the time of needing to go & going. Thus it's diaper training & then good luck kid you need to figure it out just by watching the external acts of others using the toilet without having a clue whats going on in your own body & consciously practicing using your sphincters. There is a study showing Vietnamese babies allowed to eliminate free of a diaper when signalling or at biologically normal times (upon waking, after feeding) have the same sphincter control as a 3yr old conventionally toilet trained Swedish child. They concluded some sphincter control is present at birth but if ignored it is lost, but if they are allowed to practice consciously the control is mastered further. Then there is the 2012 study that shows that any diaper including thin disposables (note: they are not so thin after some pee is in there) significantly affects natural walking gait vs no diaper, causing more falling & wider unnatural stepping. Piker commented alot about the natural grace of animals & how the modern child is hampered by clothing & unnatural sitting devices, that the naked (diaperless) child moves more freely & more capably. I encourage more people to read up on what Montessori Toilet Awareness & Learning actually is. Here's a good start: http://montessoriguide.org/toilet-training-versus-toilet-learning/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4831666902408078223.post-78144616267795617282018-06-06T03:59:51.554-07:002018-06-06T03:59:51.554-07:00Hello nadine..this story really touching me..i am ...Hello nadine..this story really touching me..i am a mother too and your story gives me support to keep trust my Son. The materials that were designed for 3 and up are not used in birth to 3 classrooms. The materials are open ended, and they learn through exploration. Toilet learning is not forced. It is a process, and is done similarly to how it was done at Loczy. The care of self, aids to independence were also practiced by Pikler at Loczy. Allowing children to participate in their own care is also a Pikler practice. There is no forcing, it is something that they are interested in doing. And as mentioned above, Montessori From the Start is not a great reference. Maria Montessori did not practice or advocate for many of things that are considered "Montessori infant toddler practice" today. We also use RIE and Pikler in the training center where I was trained, and where I now train Montessori birth to 3 teachers.
